Council tax can be confusing for students. The good news: full-time students are usually exempt.
Are students exempt from council tax?
A property where everyone is a full-time student is generally exempt from council tax. To count, your course typically must last at least one academic year and involve a minimum amount of study per week.
What about mixed households?
If one adult in the home is not a full-time student, the household may receive a 25% single-person-style discount rather than a full exemption. If two or more are non-students, the full bill usually applies, though students themselves are "disregarded".
How to claim
You'll usually need a council tax exemption certificate from your university to give to the council. Keep it handy when you move in. For more on settling into a new tenancy, see our student renting guide.
